WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

¹Before the Higgins name became Higginbotham, before any of this, there was money the family didn't have anymore. ²The bootlegging had dried up years earlier — too many buyers who talked, too many runs that came up short. ³They needed a new business, and Delaware handed them one every September: the Little Brown Jug, one of harness racing's oldest fixtures, and the money that moves around it in ways that never touch a payout window.

⁴You can't fix a race you don't control. ⁵So they set out to build the one thing that would let them control it — a horse too fast to bet against. ⁶That's where the testing began.

⁷They didn't pick a horse at random. ⁸Princess was already the kind of Standardbred a stable gets once in a lifetime — bay-coated, unremarkable pedigree on paper, but trainers who watched her work the half-mile called her a natural. ⁹She had the promise. ¹⁰They needed the guarantee. ¹¹So they gave her something to close the gap.

¹²Feed logs from the property show a break in her diet in the final weeks — a tonic, hand-mixed, administered without a vet present. ¹³Traces of belladonna turned up in the tack room afterward, which is either the answer or exactly what someone wanted us to find. ¹⁴We haven't ruled either out.

¹⁵What we do know: whatever was in that tonic didn't make her faster. ¹⁶It changed her. ¹⁷And when the family realized what they'd made, they did what they always do with what they can't explain — they buried it somewhere it wouldn't be looked at twice, and buried their own name right along with it.

¹⁸Her name was Princess. ¹⁹Their name is Higginbotham now. ²⁰She is not resting. ²¹Something moves under that new skin now — something that wasn't part of the tonic, and hasn't finished spreading.
